Description

This file contains ms and typescript drafts of 5 essays intended to form [part of] a collection of essays based around Edward Hicks' The Peaceable Kingdom. Includes ms and typescript drafts of essay 2, on 'The Common Reader;' ms and ts drafts of essay 3, including discussion of Eric Heller's 'The Disinherited Mind;' an ms draft of essay 4, on tenderness and expression; ts drafts of essay 5, titled 'The Primitive Artist,' discussing Alice Ford's biographical work on Hicks; an ms draft towards Silkin's long essay on Hicks and The Peaceable Kingdom; ms notes on 'Hicks's Miltonic moment;' and photocopied pages from an unidentified publication (pp. 270-331) which includes discussion/commentary on biblical themes and references to the Society of Friends.Also held in this file are clean typescript copies of essays 2, 3 and 5. Correspondence with Catharine Carver of Oxford University Press, previously held in this file, suggests that these 'chapters' were sent to her for consideration for
publication.
