The authorship of Memoirs of an English officer, first published in 1728, has been erroneously attributed to Captain George Carleton. These memoirs are a fiction, written by Defoe and intended by him to be accepted as the genuine reminiscences of a soldier. Cf. Defoe, D. Memoirs of an English officer, London, 1970, pref.
