Description
The original (provisionally dated ca. 1300) was presented to the library of Trinity College, Dublin University, by Dr. Francis Sadleir. It is composed of 40 unnumbered leaves, of which 36 are decorated on recto and verso with large miniatures (leaf 37 verso, blank) which are numbered III to LXXV at the foot of each page and are the work of an unknown artist of the East Anglian school. The last 3 leaves of the manuscript, written in double columns, contain (1) directions for church services (f. 38ro) and (2) part of the Meditations of Saint Bernard (chapters I-II and part of III, f. 38ro-40vo). The first leaf of the manuscript, which must have contained the first two and part of the third chapters of the Apocalypse in Addition to two miniatures, is lacking. The subjects of the missing miniatures were probably John in Patmos and John and the Angel.
The frontispiece is a duplicate in colors of miniature no. XXIIII.
