Description

These files contain mixed papers and correspondence relating to the functions of the Poetry Room Committee (PRC). Includes circular memos and agendas, and ms notes, typescript drafts, and clean copies of minutes for PRC meetings held on 28 January 1965 (inaugural meeting), 24 February [1965 or 1966], 17 March [1966?], 26 October 1966, 23 November 1966, 1 February 1967, 24 May 1967, 24 November 1967, 20 March 1968, 16 December 1971, 10 November 1976, 11 March 1977, 1 June 1977, 3 December 1977, 2 February 1979, 21 March 1980 (Alistair Stead's ms notes only) and 12 March 1981 (Stead's ms notes only). There are also copies of circular letters relating to the Poetry Room and Poetry Room recordings; further ms notes in the hands of Geoffrey Hill and Alistair Stead; a photocopied letter and plans relating to the proposed new Poetry Room (September 1967); a copy of the British Council Publications and Recorded Sound Department's supplement to their catalogue of tape recordings issued in November
1967; a leaflet for the Poetry Room at the Brynmoor Jones Library, University of Hull (1968); and copies of a circular signed by Kevin Crossley-Holland and E.T. Webb regarding proposals for a Northern Universities Poetry Circuit (ca. 1971).Correspondence held in this file comprises original and copy letters sent from, between, and to members of the PRC, in particular Geoffrey Hill. Hill's correspondence covers the period 1 February 1965 - 9 November 1976, correspondents including Peter Redgrove, Andrew Gurr, Graeme Kemelfield, Audrey Stead, Jack Pilgrim, Alistair Stead, John Horden, Peter Orr, A. Norma Jeffares, Phillipa Reid, and Jay Wright. There are additionally letters to (and from) Alistair Stead from Les Murray, John Horden, Kendrick Smithyman, R. D. McEldowney, William Walsh, A. Norman Jeffares and Reg Ross. There are also letters to W. J. McCormack from William Walsh and John Barnard; and letters to Charles Barber from McCormack.
