Description
Ms and ts draft translations (48 ff), from a file marked 'Drafts of fragments of OE poems translated in period 1963-1965 including Judith, Exodus, Advent Lyrics etc; some used in 'Maldon', 1965, some printed separately.' Includes draft translations of 'The Phoenix'; 'The Frisian Wife'; 'Against A Wren'; metrical charms for a swarm of bees, and for the theft of cattle; 'The Brussels Cross'; 'Maxims I'; 'Maxims II'; 'Judith'; 'Genesis B'; 'Exodus'; and the first, second and seventh Advent Lyrics of the Exeter Book. Includes note and comments on the translation of 'Genesis B' from Brian Mitchell.Also, file of 33 ff of ms and ts workings for a translation of 'Orosius', a 9th-century account of the voyages of Othere and Wulfstan. Includes a letter from Peter Quennell (editor of History Today), dated 25 March 1963; ms background notes; ms and ts early drafts of the translation; a later ts version with minor corrections in ms; and a second later version (ts) with note 'extra copies,' also with
minor ms corrections.
