45 items of correspondence, chiefly relating to the publication of Hill's poetry collection 'Canaan' by Penguin in 1996. Correspondence with Penguin includes:

- 2 typescript letters from Paul Keegan to Geoffrey Hill (22 December 1995 - 13 March 1996), and 2 cc typescript letters (1 faxed) from Hill to Keegan (3 January 1996 - 1 March 1996);

- 6 cc typescript letters (faxed) from Hill to Anna South (21 March 1996 - 6 May 1996), and 5 typescript letters (including faxes) from South to Hill (25 March 1996 - 7 May 1996); Hill's letter of 25 March 1996 accompanied by copies of his permissions requests to Oxford University Press and Éditions du Boréal; Hill's letter of 9 April 1996 accompanied by a copy of letter from Éditions du Boréal; Hill's letter of 16 April 1996 accompanied by a photocopied typescript of his poem To William Cobbett: In Absentia; Hill's letter of 30 April 1996 accompanied by letter from Oxford University Press;

- 1 typescript letter (faxed) from Claire Peligry to Hill (27 March 1996), and 4 cc typescript letters (faxed) from Hill to Peligry (1 April 1996 - 23 April 1996); Peligry's letter comprises 2 pages from a fax of 11 pages;

- 1 cc typescript letter from Hill (faxed) to Tim Bates (16 April 1994), accompanied by a photocopied typescript of his poem To William Cobbett: In Absentia;

- 8 typescript letters (including faxes) from various correspondents at Penguin (including Picture Research, Cover Editorial and Publicity) to Hill (28 February 1996 - 29 October 1996), and 6 cc typescript letters (faxed) from Hill to Penguin (11 March 1996 - 9 October 1996); Penguin letter of 3 April 1996 accompanied by a copy of the cover blurb for Canaan; Hill's letter of 3 April 1996 held with a copy of the cover blurb for Canaan with Hill's ms revisions/corrections; Hill's letter of 30 April 1996 accompanied by a copy of the biographical note for Canaan with his ms revisions/corrections.Other correspondence relating to 'Canaan' includes:

- 1 ms letter from William Cookson to Hill (8 June 1996) accompanied by a typescript list of misprints found in the page proofs of Canaan.The file also contains 1 typescript fax from the Permissions Department at Penguin to Hill referring to David Impastato (19 April 1996), and 1 typescript letter from Impastato to Hill (20 April 1996).
