Description
Reprinted from the original edition in the British museum (239. i. 16).
Contains an early allusion to Shakespeare, and is supposed to refer to him under the initials W. S.
Appendix: I. Extracts from the preliminary matter of Penelope's complaint, by Peter Colse - II. The apologie, shewing the true meaning of Willobie his Avise. The victorie of English chastitie, vnder the fained name of Avisa, by Willoby - III. Depositions of witnesses who gave evidence before the commission hald at Cerne Abbas on 21st March, 1594.
Ostensibly edited by Hadrian Dorrell from the papers of his friend Henry Willoughby: thought to be the work of Dorrell himself, though the name is probably fictitious. Has been ascribed to the Earl of Southampton, Matthew Roydon, and others. The present editor locates the poem at Cerne Abbas, and ascribes it to a friend of Raleigh.
With facsimile of the original t.-p.: Willobie his Avisa. Or, The true Picture of a modest Maid, and of a chast and constant wife. In Hexamiter verse... Imprinted at London by Iohn Windet. 1594.
