This file contains items relating to Hill's teaching on Charles Wesley as part of the Aspects of Poetry and Religion course (UNI HU 658) at Boston University. Includes 2 ff ms notes; photocopied excerpts from Wesley's sermons with some annotations by Hill; photocopied typescript excerpt from the Preface of Newton's 'Olney Hymns'; a syllabus for the Aspects of Poetry and Religion course for Fall 1993; and multiple copies of class texts including John Dryden's 'Venus's Song', Wesley's 'Love divine, all loves excelling ...', biographical information on John Newton, Isaac Watts's 'The Day of Judgment', William Cowper's 'The Castaway' and 'Hatred and Vengeance, My Eternal Portion', the hymn 'Oh the depth of love Divine ...', Wesley's 'Stay, Thou insulted Spirit, stay ...', and excerpts from Wesley's hymns, letters, sermons and journals.A note on one of the sub-files in which these items were originally held indicates that the materials may have been used in the seminar on Emily Bronte and the
18th-century religious and political legacy.The file also contains Hill's own copies of class texts, many of which include his ms annotations: Watts's 'The Day of Judgment', William Cowper's 'The Castaway' and 'Hatred and Vengeance, My Eternal Portion', Wesley's 'Love divine, all loves excelling ...', 'Jesu, Lover of my soul ...' and 'Stay, Thou insulted Spirit, stay ...', and John Dryden's 'Venus's Song'. Also, a photocopied excerpt from the chapter 'The Classicism of Charles Wesley' from Donald Davie's 'Purity of Diction in English Verse' (1967); and typescript copies of Herman Melville's poems 'The March Into Virginia' and 'The Maldive Shark'.
