Features

Marginal annotations and crossings out in black ink manuscript, late fifteenth- and sixteenth century, mainly in the first volume containing parts I-III.


Bindings


Parts I-III and IV-V are bound separately in late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century German bindings of full pigskin over pasteboard. The decoration is nearly identitical on the upper covers which are are blind-tooled with frames of multiple fillets containing diagonal multiple fillets. The inner frames contain a repeating design of stylised foliage and flowers. The outer frames are blind-tooled with scrolls. The lower cover of the first volume is blind-tooled with a frame of multiple fillets. The outer frame is blind-tooled with scrolls. The central panel is blind-tooled with diagonal fillets to form a cross with a flower motif at the centre. The lower cover of the second volume is blind-tooled with a frame of triple fillets and the central panel contains a pattern of diagonal multiple fillets and fleurons with a flower motif at each intersection. Outside the frame are blind-tooled scrolls. The spines have twelve raised bands in six pairs. In the first panel of the first volume is
a paper lettering piece with writing in black ink manuscript: Baldus de Perusio. Written directly onto the spine in the third panel in black ink manuscript is the Roman numeral V. At the base of the spine is a rectangular paper lettering piece on which is printed a small crown and beneath: Nr. 691. Written directly onto the spine in the sixth panel is the number: 775. There is writing in early black ink manuscript on the head-edge and fore-edge. In the first panel of the second volume is a paper lettering piece with writing in black ink manuscript: Baldus de Perusio. Written directly onto the spine in the third panel in black ink manuscript is the Roman numeral IV. At the base of the spine is a rectangular paper lettering piece on which is printed a small crown and beneath: Nr. 690. Above this are the remains of another label with writing in black ink manuscript: II 779. The same number appears in ink manuscript on the upper cover of the book. There is writing in early black ink
manuscript on the head-edge and fore-edge. On the edges of the covers of both volumes are the remains of four leather thongs which once fastened the books. Volume 1 - Size: 428 x 290mm. Leaf size: 420 x 278mm. Volume 2 - Size: 430 x 290mm. Leaf size: 421 x 278mm.

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown of each item. The books were most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
