Features

Bindings

Early twentieth-century binding of inlaid red brown goatskin over pasteboard by Riviere & Son whose name is gold-tooled on the turn-in at the bottom of the front pastedown. The binding is a facsimile of an early English binding by Berthelet executed for Edward VI and found on the copy of Petri Bembi Historia Venetæ (1561) from the old Royal Collection and now in the British Museum. The upper and lower covers are decorated with a blind-tooled border of triple fillets and a decorative border and frames in black and gold, with circles at intervals. Inside the circles and frames are gold-tooled fleurons and stylised foliage. Gold-tooled in the central panel are the words: Stultifera navis - Brant - 1497. The spine has five raised bands each gold-tooled with a single fillet. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Stultifera navis. Gold-tooled in the third panel are the name and date: Brant - 1497. The other panels are decorated with a gold-tooled border in black and a central
fleuron. The board edges are gold-tooled with a single fillet and the turn-ins with two fillets. The book has gilt edges. The book is preserved in a loose burgundy cover inside a mottled brown slipcase. Gold-tooled on the spine of the loose cover are the words: Stultifera navis Brant - 1497. Size: 218 x 159mm. Leaf size: 213 x 150mm.
