Bindings
Early twentieth-century binding of full brown-black goatskin over pasteboard by Riviere & Son whose name is gold-tooled on the turn-in at the bottom of the front pastedown. The binding is a facsimile of that found on the fifteenth-century manuscript of Arati Phaenomena preserved in the British Museum. The upper cover is blind-tooled with a border and frame of triple fillets. The frame contains a pattern of interlace with small red circles at intervals. In the central panel is a circular ornament containing a star motif and at its centre a small red circle. Above and below this ornament are three rows of interlace with small red circles at intervals. The spine has five raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Biblia Latina. Gold-tooled in the third panel are the place and date: Venice 1492. The remaining panels are blind-tooled with a row of interlace with small red circles at intervals. The board edges and the turn-ins are blind-tooled with two fillets. The book has
gilt edges. The book is preserved in a loose burgundy cover inside a mottled brown slipcase. Gold-tooled on the spine of the loose cover are the words: Biblia Latina Venice 1492. Size: 171 x 123mm. Leaf size: 166 x 114mm.
Provenance
Armorial bookplate of Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis, VIII Baron Howard de Walden (1880-1946), on the front pastedown.
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the recto of the front free endpaper. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
