Bindings
Late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century German binding of full pigskin over pasteboard. The upper cover is blind-tooled with a frame of multiple fillets with a central panel containing a repeating design of stylised foliage and flowers. The frame is blind-tooled with scrolls. The lower cover is blind-tooled with a border and frame of double fillets. The frame is blind-tooled with scrolls and there is a flower motif in each corner. The central panel is blind-tooled with diagonal fillets to form a cross with a tool of stylised foliage in between the fillets and a flower motif at the centre. The spine has twelve raised bands in six pairs. In the first panel is a paper lettering piece with writing in black ink manuscript: Baldus de Perusio. Written directly onto the spine in the third panel in black ink manuscript is the Roman numeral II. At the base of the spine is a rectangular paper lettering piece on which is printed a small crown and beneath: Nr. 688. There is writing in early
black ink manuscript on the head-edge and fore-edge. On the edges of the covers are the remains of four leather thongs which once fastened the book. Size: 430 x 290mm. Leaf size: 420 x 285mm.

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
