Features
Very occasional marginal annotations in black ink manuscript.
Major initials supplied in red in volumes 1 and 2, and alternately in red and blue in volumes 3 to 6.
All volumes are missing the final blank leaves.
Bindings
All six volumes are bound in sheepskin over pasteboard, eighteenth-century. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border of double fillets. The spines have six raised bands with gold-tooled ornamentation and double fillets to either side. In the second panel of each volume is a pared red leather lettering piece gold-tooled with the words: Biblia cum glossa ordin. Gold-tooled in the third panel of each volume is the date: 1498. Gold-tooled in Roman numerals in the fourth panel of each volume is the volume number. The board edges and turn-ins are gold-tooled with a repeating pattern of stylised foliage. The pastedowns are of marbled paper featuring the curl pattern in red, yellow, blue and cream. The leaf edges are coloured red and the books have red silk ribbon registers. Provenance
On the title page of each volume is an inscription in seventeenth-century black ink manuscript: Ipse Toletanus Ludowicus nempe Tribaldus / Regius indorum, primus et historicus. / Nominis eiusdem, studia ob felicia nati / (Huius quippe domus altæ sub auspiciis) / Sacra dat hæc sacris ter bina volumina alumnis / Munere ne careat Bibliotheca suo. / anno d[omi]ni 1630. ætatis suæ 73, / Nonis / octobris.
In black ink manuscript on each title page is an inscription, now mostly indistinct but for: [...] de la libreria del coll [...] ?Alcala [...] 8.
There are notes in Spanish in black ink manuscript on the title page of volume 6.
On the verso of the front pastedown in volumes 2 to 6 is an oval purple stamp with the words: Eduardo Gutierrez pro. Sevilla. In the first volume the stamp has been removed leaving a hole.
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown of each volume. The books were most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
