Description
The booklet is most probably an autograph of Menaḥem ben Yitsḥaḳ Noṿairah (1717–1777). It contains two sermons. According to Menaḥem's own statement on the wrapper's left side recto, he performed the first sermon on the payment of the community tax (cassella) in the Ashkenazic community on Wednesday 27 February 1765 (6 Adar I [5]525), and the second sermon about severe sins, like that of the theft from gentiles, on the night of Monday 5 February 1776 (15 Shevat [5]536). Menaḥem recorded the first sermon mainly in Italian with Hebrew quotations, the second mainly in Hebrew with some Italian.
Contents:
1. folios 1–21 (left to right foliation) "Consigliatevis con la morte" (Italian with Hebrew quotations).
2. folios 1r–16r (right to left foliation): מאמר במס[כת] מנחות״ ופרושים אחרים" (folios 8v-9v and 10v are blank; ״מוסר על הגזל בפרט של גוים״ on folio 14).
The blank pages and spaces between the texts indicate that the writer possibly intended to extend his Italian paraphrases or wanted to add expositions.
State of text:
Some leaves are damaged by pests with loss of text.
Form and layout of the booklet are nearly identical with that of three other booklets in Roth’s collection (MS Roth 713–15). These booklets also contain sermons authored by Menaḥem Noṿairah and are most probably written in his own hand. Together, the four booklets are a set of expositions and sermons delivered by Menaḥem Noṿairah on several occasions between the years 1758 and 1776.
