Bound-with codex comprising 8 different codicological units written possibly in 8 different Italian hands, containing:

1. folios 1–20 (221mm x 157mm): [פירוש מאמרי הזוהר] with hagahot and annotations in the margins (maybe by secondary hand); איננו מקבלת האר׳׳י according to catalogue description of the National Library in Israel (system no. 990001882300205171); the text is likely incomplete with leaves missing after folios 4 and 8; it comprises: פירוש של מאמר זהר פ׳ בראשית דף כ׳׳ב [ע]מוד אל[ף] ויאמר אלהים נעשה אדם (folio 1r); פרוש למאמר של שלח לך כדי להבין מאמר של הזהר פ׳ שלח לך דף קס׳׳ה (folio 5v); פירוש למאמר זהר פ׳ בראשית דף ה׳ ב׳ והיינו בהקדמת הזהר (folio 12r); פירוש של המאמר זהר פ׳ מנחם דף רל׳׳ג ב׳ (folio 14v); פירוש של מאמר זהר פ׳ אחרי אות דף ע׳׳א ב׳ (folio 17r).

2. folios 21–54 (219mm x 157mm): ‏[‏פרוש על הזוהר‏ ‏(‏שמות‏)‏ : עם פרושים מאת משה זכות‏]‏ (Perush ʿal ha-Zohar (Shemot) : ʿim perushim me-et Mosheh Zacuto); many commentaries (probably previous hagahot) begin with מ‏[‏שה‏]‏ ז‏[‏כות‏] ל‏[י‏]‏ נ‏[‏ארה‏]‏; incomplete with beginning(?) and end missing (commentary runs from folio ב׳ to ס׳׳ח in the Zohar). In folio 28r, the opening words of פ׳ וארא are: איתא בס׳ זהר הרקי׳ שלי.

3. folios 55r–60v (folios 58v–60v are blank) (209mm x 148mm): סדר של פסח : ‏[‏עם כוונות האר׳׳י, נתן שפירא, ובית מדרשו של משה זכות : עם תפילות נוספים של שמשון בקי / נערך על ידי שמשון בקי‏]‏ (Seder shel Pesaḥ : ʿim kaṿanot ha-Ari, Natan Shapira, u-vet midrasho shel Mosheh Zacut : ʿim tefilot nosafim shel Shimshon Baḳi / neʿerakh ʿal yede Shimshon Baḳi); with marginal annotations and editorial(?) markings; the catalogue description of the National Library in Israel (system no. 990001882320205171) suggests that the text might be an autograph of Samson Bachi (it refers to Ms. Mich. Add. 32 (Neubauer 1889), Bodleian Library, Oxford, UK which could not be seen by cataloguer).

4. folios 61–64 (203mm x 142): Beginning of [תפילת שחרית עם כוונות האר׳׳י] (Tefilot shaḥarit ʿim kaṿanot ha-Ari) with hagahot in the margins by Nathan Shapira (הנשי׳׳א).

5. folios 65–66 (foliated by the scribe as folio ב and ג‏) ‎(215mm x 150): Part of [פרוש פסוקים על דרך הקבלה]; opening words: ויקחו את לוט בן אחי אברהם ואת כל רכושו.

6. folios 67–70 (220mm x 152mm): [הזהר על התורה (פרשת בראשית) : עם פירוש אור יקר / מאת משה קורדואירו] (ha-Zohar ʿal ha-Torah (parashat Bereshit) : ʿim perush Or yaḳar / me-et Mosheh Ḳordoṿero); incomplete, comprising Gen. 2:19 (siman ל׳׳ג) (beginning missing)–3:1 (siman ל׳׳ה) (beginning only); texts commences with האדם כתיב בתולות אחריה רעותיה מובאות לך מביאות.

7. folios 71–74 (215mm x 156mm): מא‏מרי חז׳׳ל ובריתות וסוגיות : ‏[‏עם פירוש מקבלת האר׳׳י‏]‏ (Maʾamre Ḥazal u-varaitot ṿe-sugyot : ʿim perush mi-ḳabalat ha-Ari); below the heading added, possible in the handwriting of Binyamin ha-Kohen Ṿitale, בסוף ס׳ הליקוטי׳ של מורי הרמ׳׳ז נר׳׳ו; incomplete end of text is missing.

Binding

20th-century quarter brown leather bound with brown-beige marbled paper over boards; spine is gilt-lettered with "Miscellaneous Writings Benjamin Cohen of Reggio M.S."; a leather label gilt-lettered with MS Roth 416 is attached to upper spine (probably done by conservation in 1999); there are several items in Roth's collection which have a similar binding; most of them are bound-with or composite codices.

Scribal information

Written by several hands. According to Roth, "Catalogue", no. 416, the manuscript is "mainly in handwriting of Benjamin Cohen Vitale"; a cursory comparison of the texts in MS Roth 416 with autograph letters of Vitale could not confirm this with certainty (see MS Or. 9165, British Library, London (National Library of Israel (NLI), Online Catalogue, system-no. 990001234810205171)); on autograph manuscripts of Benjamin Cohen Vitale of Reggio and the characteristics of his script, see Meir Benayahu, "The Shabbatean Movement in Greece [in Heb.]," Sefunot 14 (1971), 215–6, 239–40 (MS Roth 416 is not discussed).

The note below the heading of unit 7 (see below Former owners)––if indeed written by Benjamin Cohen––could indicate that at least this part of the codex used to be in his possession before the death of his teacher Moses Zacuto.

Former owners and annotations

Numerous annotations in the margins of most of the items (see above Description).

In folio 71r: בסוף ס׳ הליקוטי׳ של מורי הרמ׳׳ז [נר?]׳׳ו is added below the heading of item 7, possible in the handwriting of Binyamin ben Eliʿezer ha-Kohen Ṿitale of Reggio.

Roth’s description of MS Roth 416, cut out from a copy of his printed catalogue, and his ex-libris are attached to front paste-down.
