Date of production:

Isaac ha-Levi Valle of Verona died in 1680 (see Mortara, Indice alfabetico dei rabbini (Padua, 1886)); the honorific נטריה רחמנא ופרקיה after Valle’s name in the title of the manuscript (folio 6r) indicates that it was possibly written before his death.


Codicological characteristics:

The codex comprises 2 distinct codicological units written by 2 different hands on different paper in 2 slightly different layouts (folios: 1–24: 36 lines; folios 25–45: 24 lines); transition from first codicological unit to second (beginning with folio 25r) with some overlap of content.

Incomplete with leaves missing within and at end of text; some leaves are misbound (like folio 45 which should have followed folio 40).

3. folios 11v–17r: Chapters 65–68 [הלכות דם].

6. folio 36r–39r: Chapter 83 [הלכות דגים].

State of text: Incomplete;iInk seepage; staining with loss of text; over-trimmed tail margins with loss of catchwords and some text; the item underwent extensive conservation work in the 1990s during which the item was rebound; the microfilm of MS Roth 304 made on behalf of the Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts of the NLI (see below Bibliographical note) shows that the beginning of the item’s collation used to be disarray before it was rebound.
