Creator:

The inscription at end of the prayer part (folio 20v) indicates that Ṃenaḥem ben Yitsḥaḳ Naṿoira (Navarra) was probably the author of at least part, if not all, the original hymns: כל שאני זכאי באמירתו והראני את נוהו מכון שבתו אודה י׳׳י בכל לבב ובשפה ברורה הצעיר מנחם בכ׳׳ר יצחק נוויירה ז׳׳ל.


Summary and contents:

Item is written from both ends (see also below foliation). Its two parts concern the extension of the existing Ashkenazic synagogue in Verona with an additional prayer-hall ׳עזרה׳ starting in the 1730s, and its dedication service in 1764.

1. folios 1–20: (from the right end of the item): Prayers and hymns for the dedication service.

2. folios 21–25 (from right end): mostly blank with pen-trials and notes in different hand and script.

3. folios 26r–55r (from the left end of the item): Documents (copies) 1733–1764, majority in Italian interspersed with Hebrew; Hebrew part in folios 42–46; documents concern the funding and running of the additional prayer hall, they comprise texts like testaments, minutes of council meetings with lists of attending members, regulations of the services (תקנות), accounting, et cetera.

4. folios 56v–75v (center of the item): blank.


State of text: Well preserved; item underwent conservation work.

Lavishly illustrated and beautifully written; all illustrations are done in ink:

Title page on each end of the item without written text but with borders in lavish rococo style (cornucopia on folio 1r); elaborate head- and tail-pieces in form of still-lives (eagle (folio8v), instruments for painting and writing (folio 20v), classical soldiers equipment, that is, helmet with plume, breastplate, et cetera (folio 46); musical instruments (46v) and others); headings and Hebrew numeration of texts are decorated with rococo vignettes; elaborate dividing lines with flower vines (folios 19v–20); accounting table (folio 50v–54v).

Foliation: i (marbled paper; paste-down) + ii (original fly-leaves) + 25 (foliated, from right to left, as 1–25 from right to left) + xx + 30 (foliated, starting at the other end of the item, as 26–55 from left to right) + i (original fly-leaf) + i (marbled paper; paste-down); foliation in ink, upper left recto (from right to left) and upper right recto (from left to right); folios 1v, 21r–23r, 24r, 25v, 26v, are blank but ruled; folios 23v, 24v–25r are ruled and were probably originally blank.

Ruling: frame-ruled in pencil, 21 ruled lines.

Script: Italian cursive Hebrew script; Latin chancery script.

Binding

18th-century full mottled calfskin over boards; sewn over 7 raised bands; gold-tooled decorations on spine; decorative end-papers (pink and white floral pattern); two pairs of red ties attached to fore-edges; blue and red sprinkled text block edges.

Some hymns are vocalised.

Scribal information

Menaḥem ben Isaac Navarra’s note at the end of the prayer part (folio 20v) (see above description) indicates, maybe, that he also was the scribe of the item (see on this Frojmovič, Hebraica (Leeds, 1997), no. 11).
