Summary:

Incomplete; probably at least 36 leaves at beginning are missing. Item comprises two parts written most likely by the same hand:

1. folios 3–98: First two chapters and part of the third chapter of Sha’arei Tsiyon by Natan Neṭaʻ ben Mosheh Hanover: תקון חצות ‎(folio 3r; תקון הנפש (folio 24v‎); תקוני תפלות (folio ‎35r‎).

2. folios 99–138: Petitionary prayers, many of them kabbalistic, among them בקשה מועילה לחן ולחסד ולכל צורך: יה י׳׳י ישעי י׳׳י יחידתי הצל והושיעני (folio 104r); בקשה ותפלה לר[בי] ש[מעון] שבזי ז"ל מיוסדת בסוד כוז"ו להחזיר האדם בתשובה ולהתיש יצר הרע: כביר ואדיר זכאי (folio 107v); תפלה לכל דבר: רבון העולמים בעל הסליחות (folio 108r); בקשה לרבי ישמעאל בן אלישע: אמר רבי ישמאל כל האומר בקשה זו… אנא השם י״י אלהי ישראל (folio 118r); תפלת אליהו הנביא (folio 125v); תפלת הבחורים כתב בעל של"ה ‏[ישעיה בן אברהם הלוי הורװיץ]‏ … ‏יהי רצון‏ מלפניך (folio 131v); בקשה על גלות השכינה (folio 133r); בקשה נאה: אצעק אקרא אל (folios 135v–138r).


State of text: Incomplete; stained and mutilated, pest-damage; underwent conservation work.

Decoration 1: Special representation of Tetragrammaton (folio [28v]); it is found in most printed editions of Sha’arei Tsiyon in תקון הנפש.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: iii (i is paste-down) + i (original fly-leaf; surviving part pasted to front paste-down) + ii (foliated as 1–2) + 136 (foliated as 3–138) + i (original fly-leaf; surviving part pasted on back paste-down) + iii (iii is paste-down); modern pencil-foliation, upper left recto; folios 3–36 are foliated by the scribe in ink as לז to עב; folio is [138v] are blank.

Catchwords: horizontal, versos and rectos (some are not repeated on following page but text continues; no loss of text).

Number of lines: 14-16.

Script: Yemenite square Hebrew script.

Binding

Full leather binding over boards; blind-tooled designs on both boards; spine is divided by 2 raised bands into 3 compartments, each of which is decorated with blind-tooled designs. Item was rebound with its orginial boards (the latter are upside down in relation to the text); gilt-lettered with MS Roth 79 by conservation.

Vocalisation and cantillation

All liturgical parts are vocalised.

Flourished Hebrew owner's notes in extant part of front and back paste-downs. Pen trials on front fly-leaves.


Roth acquired MS Roth *79 most likely after 1950; it is not listed in his, "Catalogue", in Alexander Marx: Jubilee Volume, vol. 1 (New York, 1950), 503–35.
