Summary:

The item is a bound-with codex comprising one manuscript followed by fragments of 3 printed liturgical Hebrew items (see below).

The manuscript part contains lists (‘orders of study’) specifying Bible passages, as well as some full passages from Mishnah and Zohar to be read and/or studied during various special occasions, like circumcision or commemoration of the dead; it also contains prayers and some hymns to be recited before and after the study.


Among the handwritten texts are:

Bound-with printed quires:

1: 2 folios of תקוני שבת (folios סד to סה).

2: 3 folios of סדר הבדלה (folios פא to פג).

3: 10 folios from, most probably, an edition of שערי ציון (Shaʿare Tsiyon) by Nosen Note ben Moysheh Hanover; תיקון חצות and תקון הנפש are extant (folios יד to כד).


State of text: Worn, stained and mutilated; folio 1 is loose.

Decoration 1: Different script sizes for different parts of the text, like headings and initial words.

Decoration 2: Some ornaments crudely imitating tail-pieces or ornaments dividing the text.

Decoration 3: Ornamental dots above some words.

Decoration 4: Uniform relatively carefully executed layout of the limudim with some ornamentation.

Decoration 5: Poetic spacing.

Decoration 6: Substitute for Tetragrammaton.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: 28 (manuscript) + i + 15 (print; 3 items); 4 bound-with items, each with modern pencil foliation, upper left recto (except folio 28); printed items have printed Hebrew foliation; folio 1r was originally blank, folio 28v is blank.

Ruling: frame-ruled in pencil; generally 21 ruled lines.

Number of lines: 19-21 (manuscript).

Script: Italian Hebrew script.

Ms. bound with print: width 132mm height 190mm

Binding

Sewn into stiff paper wraper covered by decorated paper (floral pattern) which is mostly lost through damage. Held in drop-box covered with brown cloth.

Vocalisation and cantillation

The readings from Mishnah and Zohar as well as some prayers are vocalised.

Former owners and annotations

A illegible owner’s note begins on folio 1r with "Il Libro…."

There a some Italian annotations possibly by the scribe.
