Bindings
Late fifteenth century German binding of dark brown calf over thick wooden boards. The upper cover is blind-tooled with a border of triple fillets and a central panel containing lines of diagonal triple fillets. Each compartment is filled with several small circular and diamond-shaped tools of saints, fleurs-de-lys, flowers, animals, birds and scrolls containing the name Maria. The lower cover is blind-tooled with a border of triple fillets and two diagonal lines of triple fillets forming a cross. The spine has five raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Nicolaus Panormitanus Super libros decretalium. In the fifth panel is the Brotherton Collection stamp in gold. Gold-tooled in the sixth panel are the place and date: Basel 1477. The book has metal cornerpieces and is fastened with two decorated metal clasps with replacement leather straps catching on the upper cover. The pastedowns are of vellum. Size: 417 x 300mm. Leaf size: 404 x 287mm.
Provenance
Oval black library stamp on the recto of blank leaf [1]: Ex Bibliotheca Academiae Rostochiensis (the stamp of the Universitätsbibliothek Rostock). Above and below are two purple oval duplicate stamps.
Beneath the woodcut on the recto of leaf [2] is the same oval black library stamp: Ex Bibliotheca Academiae Rostochiensis. Alongside it is a purple oval duplicate stamp.
Coloured armorial bookplate of Lord Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired after 17 June 1929 when Sir Edward Allen Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
