Very occasional marginal annotations in black ink manuscript, late fifteenth-century.
Book numbers supplied in red ink manuscript at the top centre of leaves, with the word liber on versos and Roman numerals on rectos.
Guide-letters supplied in the register only in black ink manuscript.
Thirty-four major initials are decorated either in gold against a background of colours or in colours highlighted in gold, one with ornamentation of stylised foliage extending along the top of the page and down the inner margin.
Other initials supplied in red and blue.
Capital strokes supplied in red in the register only.
Paragraph markers supplied in red and blue.
Leaves 20 and 21 have been stuck together and the final leaf of book v (and its conjugate leaf) is included twice.
This copy is wanting the three blank leaves.
Bindings
Seventeenth-century binding of half pigskin and mottled sheepskin over pasteboard. There are three lines of triple fillets on the pigskin where it overlaps onto the upper and lower covers. The pigskin spine has six raised bands. In the second panel is a pared black leather lettering piece with gold-tooled fillets forming a border containing the words: S. Gregorii P.P. Libri XXXV. Moralium. In the third panel is a pared black leather lettering piece with gold-tooled fillets and scallops forming a border and the name and date: Nurembergæ 1471. The leaf edges are sprinkled red. Size: 402 x 300mm. Leaf size: 384 x 273mm.
Provenance
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
