Bindings
Late fifteenth-century binding of full pigskin over thick wooden boards. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border and frame of double fillets with a central panel containing double fillets in a diamond pattern. At the top of the upper cover there is writing in gothic script, now faded and illegible. There is evidence of metal furniture having once been attached to the upper and lower covers, including four cornerpieces and a central boss. The book was fastened with two metal clasps, now removed, and there are the remains of the catch on the upper cover. The spine has four raised bands. Written in black ink manuscript directly onto the spine are the words: Sacrorum Bibliorum. Catinorum corp. totum impressum Anno XCCCCLXXVIII. Per Antonium Koburger Norimbergæ. At the base of the spine is a paper label with a number written in black ink manuscript: Ai. There are leather tabs on the fore-edge marking sections of the text. Some worm damage to the upper and lower boards. Size: 410 x 295mm. Leaf size: 395 x 280mm.
Provenance
On the recto of the first leaf is an inscription in black ink manuscript: Weyche[n]stene.
A pencil manuscript note inside the back board, now much faded, can be identified as by Bernard Quaritch Ltd.
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
