The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border of quadruple fillets and similar fillets forming a diamond motif at the centre. At each corner is a quarter circle of quadruple fillets. The spine has five raised bands. In the second panel is a pared red leather lettering piece gold-tooled with the words: Justiniani imperatoris Institutiones. The other panels are blind-tooled with a border of triple fillets and a diamond motif formed from double fillets in the centre. The board edges and turn-ins are blind-tooled with a repeating pattern. The book is preserved in a felt-lined case decorated with marbled paper featuring the curl pattern in pink, yellow and grey. Size: 418 x 300mm. Leaf size: 409 x 218mm.
