Bindings
Twentieth-century binding of brown goatskin over pasteboard by Paul Adam of Düsseldorf whose name is blind-stamped at the bottom of the lower cover. The upper cover is decorated with a border and frame of multiple blind-tooled and gold-tooled fillets with gold-tooled ornamentation between. Gold-tooled in the central panel is an elaborate lozenge-shaped design with stylised fleurs-de-lys decorated with fleurons and dots and containing the words: Thesavrvs Cornv copiæ et Horti Adonidis. At each corner of the panel is a gold-tooled motif of stylised foliage. The lower cover is decorated with a blind-tooled border and frame of three fillets, two narrow and one wide. The spine has three raised bands with gold- and blind-tooled fillets to either side of each. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Thesavrvs Cornvcopiæ et Horti Adonidis. Gold-tooled at the base of the spine are the words: Venetiis Aldvs MCCCCXCVI. The pastedowns are of marbled paper in pink, blue, brown and cream with borders of brown morocco gold-tooled with fillets containing repeating designs of twisted strands and scallops. The book has blue and red endbands and gauffered edges. Size: 319 x 227mm. Leaf size: 307 x 207mm.
Provenance
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
